Have Mercy on Me: March 1, 2017

Sin – we all commit it. Mercy – we all need it. During King David’s reign, he forgot who he was. He committed adultery. He committed murder. He got caught. His sins were exposed. And when he remembered who he was, he cried out, “Have mercy on me, God” (Psalm 51:1). We are all in need of this same divine mercy that God so dearly desires to give his children. We all need to cry out to God, “Have mercy on me!” We all need to receive and say, “Yes” to that mercy God has offered through Jesus’ atoning death on the cross. And we all need to extend mercy to those around us. After all, it is Jesus who teaches us, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Matthew 5:7). During the season of Lent this year, we are going to take a course on mercy. We’ll study it, learn about it, apply it, receive it, and share it. Mercy will be our topic when we gather for worship on Sundays, and it is our hope as well that you participate in one of our Lenten small groups. As we move through these forty days of Lent, might mercy mark our journey.
